Honoring Identity: The Power of Cultural Programming

We have always understood that culture is more than tradition—it is identity, community, belonging, and healing. We have prioritized cultural programming to ensure Indigenous youth feel seen, supported, and empowered in their identity. This commitment remains as strong today as ever.

Over the years, we have continued to learn and grow, listening to the voices of the community, Elders, and knowledge keepers so that we can better support both our youth and staff. We recognize that cultural engagement is not a static process—it evolves as we deepen our understanding and strive to provide more meaningful, enriching experiences.

In 2024, our vibrant cultural program hosted 53 enriching sessions, welcoming 199 youth throughout the year. These gatherings provided opportunities for youth to reconnect with their roots, strengthen their ties to tradition, and build confidence in their identity.

Highlights of Our 2024 Cultural Programming

Our programming offered diverse opportunities for youth to explore and celebrate their culture, including:

  • Traditional Arts & Crafting: Regalia making, beading, sewing, belt making, ribbon skirt creation, and Christmas stocking crafting
  • Ceremonial & Spiritual Practices: Community sweats, round dances, singing ceremonies, and traditional bannock making
  • Land-Based & Healing Activities: Participation in programming at Raven Healing Lodge, healing workshops, and traditional health gatherings
  • Cultural Excursions & Community Engagement: Trips to Batoche, Kawacatoose Culture Night, powwows at Kawacatoose, Pasqua, and Ranch Ehrlo Society, as well as powwow dance classes and workshops
  • Knowledge Sharing & Learning: Elder Forum, Indigenous Horse Program with Equine Assisted Learning at Yellow Thunderhorse Ranch, Indigenous Language and Art Hive sessions, and cultural training sessions for youth and staff
  • Community & Celebration: Women’s gatherings, movie nights, and attendance at major community events such as Agribition and the Queen City Ex

Strengthening Cultural Connections

Through these initiatives, we have created an environment where youth can build confidence in their identity, strengthen their connection to community, and develop a sense of pride in their heritage. By fostering cultural awareness and engagement, we support each youth by giving them the opportunity to connect with the cultural experiences and community that feel supportive to them.

As we move forward, we remain committed to listening, learning, and growing—ensuring that our cultural programming continues to reflect the needs, wisdom, and traditions of the community. Through collaboration with Elders, knowledge keepers, and the youth themselves, we will continue to nurture a space where culture is celebrated, and every young person feels empowered to embrace their identity.

Why Your Support Matters Now

Last year, thanks to generous support, we were able to offer meaningful cultural programming that helped the youth we serve reconnect with their roots, explore their identities, and feel a sense of belonging and pride. But this year, that vital programming is at serious risk.

Right now, we have effectively zero funding allocated for cultural support, and without immediate help, these important opportunities will dissolve. The need hasn’t gone away—but the resources have. If we want to continue creating space for youth to heal, grow, and celebrate their cultures, we urgently need community support to make that possible. Your donation, partnership, or advocacy can help keep this vital work alive.
