The Power of Mentorship: Creating Safe, Supportive Spaces for Youth

Youth mentorship is more than guidance—it is a lifeline for young people navigating life’s challenges. Many of the youth we serve have grown up in difficult and often traumatic circumstances, facing obstacles that test their strength and resilience daily. Without support, these barriers can feel insurmountable.

At Street Culture Project, we are deeply committed to providing youth with the love, safety, and unconditional support they need to thrive. Our mentorship programs ensure that young people are not only heard but truly seen, valued, and uplifted. We meet them where they are, offering stability, encouragement, and opportunities to build confidence as they move forward in their lives.

YSHORE: Investing in Youth Potential

In 2024, YSHORE staff dedicated themselves to supporting 65 youth, providing both housing and mentorship while investing 3,945 hours in their development throughout the year. Through direct youth interviews and ongoing data collection, we uncovered key insights into the program’s impact:

  • 83% of the youth either graduated high school or were actively working toward doing so, with an additional 47% enrolled or progressing toward post-secondary education.
  • 91% reported fewer barriers to employment, a testament to the program’s role in equipping youth with the tools to build a stable future.
  • 95% experienced meaningful improvements in their relationships, affirming that they felt supported and valued by SCP staff.

These achievements underscore the transformative power of consistent mentorship and a supportive environment, empowering youth to break cycles of hardship and create new opportunities for themselves.

RCY: Reintegration and Community Connection

The Regina Connected Youth (RCY) program plays a critical role in helping justice-involved youth reintegrate into their communities and build positive futures. In 2024, the program supported 50 youth, dedicating 2,565 hours to fostering growth and stability.

Through the year:

  • Staff documented 182 instances of pro-social behavior, celebrating successes in education, employment, relationships, substance use management, and more.
  • Only 27 setbacks were recorded across these areas, showing a remarkable trend of resilience and progress.

RCY’s impact goes beyond numbers—it represents real lives changed, helping youth navigate the complexities of reintegration while strengthening their sense of belonging and purpose.

Mentorship & YTU: Building Trust, Fostering Growth

In 2024, our Mentorship and Youth Transition Unit (YTU) programs served 92 youth, providing 3,111 hours of mentorship throughout the year. These programs focus on personalized, one-on-one support, helping youth develop life skills, strengthen their confidence, and work toward their goals.

For many, this mentorship is the first time they’ve experienced unwavering support and belief in their potential. It’s about showing up, being present, and proving that they are not alone in their journey.

A Commitment That Never Wavers

At SCP, we believe that every young person deserves to be supported, encouraged, and given the tools to succeed. Our mentorship programs are more than just structured services—they are relationships built on trust, respect, and the belief that each youth has the potential to thrive.

We remain dedicated to learning, adapting, and growing—ensuring that our programs continue to meet the evolving needs of the young people we serve. As we look ahead, we will continue to walk alongside youth, offering them the safety, stability, and encouragement they need to build a brighter future.
